We’re loving veggie pizza more than ever these days! The little kids and I hit a great to us sale at the grocery store yesterday. We were actually out shopping for Organic Smart Balance (sorry Mom, I found my organic alternative to Smart Balance – it’s not organic butter). To our surprise, we hit the jack pot!
We found on sale made fresh 100% whole wheat pizza dough, low fat mozzarella, pizza sauce, and pizza veggies like mushrooms and peppers…all waiting for us at the entrance – how nice. We love pizza here. It’s my favorite food as some of you know, and the kids would eat it almost everyday if it were up to them. Finding all the fixings on sale was a real sweet deal.
The kids and I decided to combine our new love of raw foods into our pizza fixing, which turned into a fixing frenzy!
We didn’t do anything fancy. My mighty pizza dough doers dug in and flattened out the dough, spread the sauce (Charlie had it everywhere), and threw on the cheese (Jody ate the misses and Romeo took care of cleaning the floor – good dog). This time though, we saved the veggies for after baking.
We baked our not so round cheese pizzas plain, while I chopped up some bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, and broccoli. When the pizzas were done and cooling on the counter, my Charlie baker finished dressing one of our pizzas with our raw veggies (Jody ditched us for Daddy). He did a good job, too, even sampling a few veggies – this makes Mommy very happy. ![]()
In fact, Charlie did and extra good job. He put ALL the raw veggies I chopped on the pizza giving us an almost 3 inch thick veggie pizza – mostly veggies! But hey, I guess that’s a good thing right? – a veggie pizza weighted by almost all veggies…
It was a good veggie pizza too, very good! I tried my first slice with a drizzle of light ranch dressing. The baby loves “dip” on his broccoli and generally likes my food better than his own. Randy tried some too, and we both agreed that our veggie pizza didn’t need it. It was actually better without it.
Charlie and Jody ate a few raw veggies, but still went with the plain cheese pizza. It’s their favorite, so I’m not surprised. I am glad that they had a few bites of veggies though. Maybe soon, they’ll opt for just the raw veggie pizza…
Raw veggie pizza… I wonder what would happen if we went into a pizza place and ordered a cheesy baked plain pizza with raw veggies on it. Do you think the staff would think us a pain in the a$$? I worked in the restaurant scene for more than 12 years. I know how staff hate specialty orders. But, would it be that hard really? And who knows, maybe a raw veggie pizza would catch on? Hmm, I’m not going to ask, lol….
In the meantime, while we’re waiting for raw veggie, restaurant pizza popularity, I’ll have the kids make it up at home. I think involving them in the cooking, making, and baking encourages them to want to eat what they’ve worked so hard to create. It makes new foods a lot less scary to them too.
And speaking of scary, check out my Charlie baker’s monster munching pizza face:
He’s getting warmed up for HaLLoWeeN! I think he’s got a pretty frightening start! Good job Charlie!
Only 28 days left until Halloween!
